(May 31, 2024) --- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District reflects on the hard work and dedicated efforts of their state partners as well as the scientist and engineers within the Corps and their unwavering commitment to Everglades restoration. USACE, and its state partners are making strategic efforts to restore, rehabilitate and reverse the damage inflicted in the past. This mission is no small task, the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan (CERP) is an intensive project with far-reaching impacts on both the Everglades and its diverse wildlife, as well as the entire population of Florida.

    Jacksonville District hosts Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway boat tour

    Jacksonville, Fla. -- (May 1, 2024) The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District, partnered with the Florida Inland Navigation District, U.S. Coast Guard, and local stakeholders, on the U.S. Army Corps survey vessel, Florida II to conduct inspections along segments of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterways. While unconventional, the ship provided an invaluable setting for decision-makers to witness firsthand the environmental areas under discussion and foster relationships among stakeholders.
  • A dredge barge sends sand to the Jacksonville Beach. The Duval County Shore Protection Project was initially constructed in 1978-80 and includes approximately 10 miles of coastline in northeast Florida. Specific areas include Naval Station Mayport, Hanna Park, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach and Jacksonville Beach.

    (ST AUGUSTINE, Fla.) - As an element of its ongoing public outreach efforts, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, hosted more than 40 St. Augustine residents to the city’s Willie Galimore Community Center April 24, for a semi-annual workshop to discuss its ongoing St. Augustine Back Bay Coastal Storm Risk Management Feasibility Study.

    MIAMI-DADE COUNTY — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District and the South Florida Water Management District joined local, state, federal, tribal officials and stakeholders to at a ribbon cutting ceremony for the Central Everglades Planning Project (CEPP) New Water Seepage Barrier Wall Project, which extends the successful underground wall that was built as part of the 8.5 Square Mile Area Seepage Wall Project on Wed. April 24, 2024.

    Turtle hatchling rescued during rare discovery in Summer Haven, Fla. This Loggerhead hatchling was rescued under the provision of the Florida Good Samaritan Act.

    It was a typical site visit to view progress on a local beach restoration project – until it wasn’t. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District employees Lindsay Brantley, Jennifer Tyler, and Brooke Warlitner were traveling along an access road toward Summer Haven to view a beach disposal site when the convoy of vehicles in front of them suddenly began to stop.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Water Management District celebrated the completion of the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands Project S-709 Pump Station project with a ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 22, 2023 in the Biscayne National Park in Homestead, Fla. The project is to rehydrate coastal wetlands and reduce damaging point-source freshwater discharge to Biscayne Bay and Biscayne National Park. The BBCW project will restore wetland and estuarine habitats, and divert an average of 59 percent of the annual coastal structure discharge into freshwater and saltwater wetlands instead of direct discharges to Biscayne Bay and Biscayne National Park.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District and South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) celebrated a major milestone for the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands Project in Miami-Dade County. The S-709 Pump Station, a component of the L31 Flow-Way, is complete and will contribute to the restoration of Biscayne Bay.

When the system is in a transition, we work together to assess the current system conditions, look back at what’s happened, and evaluate trends moving forward. Let’s review the 2022-2023 dry season and outline our strategy for the 2023 wet season.

    Jacksonville hails arrival of largest container ship to ever call at port

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla., May 4, 2023 – Less than one year since the completion of the Jacksonville Harbor 47-foot Deepening project, Jaxport marked a milestone with the arrival yesterday of the largest capacity container ship to ever call at the Blount Island Marine Terminal. The USACE Jacksonville District's Harbor Deepening project provides the water draft needed to accommodate such vessels.

    Sharon Rodriguez, Deputy Chief, Programs and Project Management, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District represented Brig. Gen. Daniel H. Hibner, Commander South Atlantic Division, at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hydrographic Services Review Panel along with Capt. José E. Díaz, Commander, Sector San Juan, Captain of the Port Puerto Rico/U. S. Virgin Islands, U.S. Coast Guard and Cristina Cabrera, Special Assistant and Interim Director of the Office of Coastal Programs and Climate Change at the Department of Natural Resources, Puerto Rico. During the presentation, Rodríguez presented an overview of the coastal projects managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District as well as the agency’s surveying capabilities and maintenance of federal channels and harbors. Rodríguez praised the partnership between both federal agencies as USACE continues to conduct surveys to be used in NOAA nautical charts and build resilient coastal projects.

    South Bay, Fla. – Feb. 22, 2023 -- Groundbreaking ceremonies have been used for centuries to celebrate the start of a new venture and give thanks to those who blazed a trail and made it possible.  The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, and the South Florida Water Management District teamed with federal, state, and local officials along with stakeholders to break ground for the Everglades Agricultural Area (EAA) Reservoir, a major component of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan that reconnects Lake Okeechobee water to the central Everglades.

    A fleet of fishing trawlers and other vessels locked through the Canaveral Lock to find safe harbor before the arrival of Tropical Storm Nicole. Canaveral lock operators locked through an amazing 222 vessels during 59 lockages in two days.

    The first generator requested for temporary power in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona is loaded and ready for transport. As soon as the work order is received, it will be transported and installed at Guanica Medical Center, Puerto Rico.

    (SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Sept. 21, 2022 -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) successfully installed a 240 Kva generator provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at the Diagnostic Treatment Center of Guanica, Puerto Rico Sept. 21, providing sufficient temporary power to the facility until commercial power is restored.

Under these MAs we have deployed a Temporary Emergency Power Planning and Response Team, Soldiers from the 249th Engineer Battalion, team leaders and assistant team leaders, as well as subject matter experts in logistics, temporary power, infrastructure assessment and debris. The Jacksonville District is coordinating with local, state and federal agencies on requirements and support in response to Hurricane Fiona.
