    (TAMPA, Fla.) - It’s already hot and humid on Saturday, and it’s only eight a.m. in Tampa, Florida. Channelside Drive is bumper-to-bumper traffic. Even though the temperature hasn’t changed much in the eight years since I lived there, the area has changed dramatically.

    Before major lock maintenance and repairs can take place, the lock must be dewatered so that inspections and repair work can be done in relatively dry conditions. Using a barge-mounted crane, the crane operator and rigging crew set a needle dam girder (I-beam) in place in notches built into the lock chamber wall. Then, they place large metal panels known as “needles” against the I-Beam to form a wall called a “needle dam.” (USACE Jacksonville District photo from a 2012 maintenance repair project at the St. Lucie Lock in 2012)

    Army Corps of Engineers temporarily closes St. Lucie Lock for major maintenance and repairs

    STUART, Fla. (Dec. 28, 2020) – After a year of planning, coordination and notification, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will conduct a planned temporary closure of the St. Lucie Lock for major maintenance and repairs starting Jan. 4, 2022, with completion expected no later than March 31.

    Dredged material removed from the Kings Bay Entrance Channel was recently placed on Nassau County beaches. Regional Sand Management at Kings Bay supports the beach project at Nassau County saving millions annually through the beneficial use of dredged material.

    The Kings Bay Entrance Channel dredging project was successfully completed last week and a new contract award for the Kings Bay Inner Channel dredging project was announced April 8.

    Traditional wood pilings at Canaveral Lock have been replaced by new environmentally friendly and long-lasting pilings.

    The new pilings being driven into place at the Canaveral Lock are a win-win. Not only are they more environmentally friendly than traditional pilings, but they are expected to last longer and save money in the end.

    Dredged material from Tampa Harbor maintenance is beneficially used on Egmont Key, which is severely eroding. The sand placement will help protect cultural resources on the island.

    Jacksonville District is responsible for 17 deep draft and 20 shallow draft harbors in Florida and the Caribbean – and it seems like teams here made progress on nearly all of them during 2014!

    The tug boat Leitner pushed a barge mounted crane into position so a crew could break up and remove a half-acre tussock or floating island, restoring navigation along the Rim Canal Route 2 of the Okeechobee Waterway and the south side of Lake Okeechobee.

    A half-acre tussock was blown by the wind, and completely blocked the navigation channel of Rim Canal Route 2 of the Okeechobee Waterway, on the south side of Lake Okeechobee. The Okeechobee Waterway is a navigable waterway that cuts across the state, from the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterway. The tug boat Leitner, with Capt. Graham Thompson at the helm, pushed a barge-mounted crane with a crew of three into position. The team successfully broke up and removed the tussock, restoring navigation on the Okeechobee Waterway.

    Eight U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District projects that will provide critical infrastructure to local ports and ecosystem restoration efforts in Florida received approval as part of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) of 2014, which was signed by President Barack Obama June 10.

    Protecting lives and infrastructure from the next storm

    The Florida Shore and Beach Preservation Association (FSBPA) presented awards in recognition of Hurricane Sandy and Tropical Storm Debby recovery efforts to two Jacksonville District team members during its 57th Annual Conference at Delray Beach Sept. 25-27.

    The Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Study, included in President Obama’s “We Can’t Wait” initiative, is being conducted on an expedited schedule. The Jacksonville Harbor (Mile Point) Navigational Study achieved a signed Chief of Engineers’ Report and Project Design Agreement, critical steps in moving the project to Congressional authorization and appropriation.

    Ports are focus of national spotlight in 2012

    Ports were thrust into the national spotlight in 2012 after President Obama announced the “We Can’t Wait” Initiative, which placed several of Jacksonville District’s port projects and studies onto the fast track for implementation. As a part of the initiative, President Obama identified seven nationally and regionally significant infrastructure projects to be expedited to help modernize and expand five major ports in the United States, including the port of Jacksonville and the port of Miami.
