Jacksonville, Fla. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District began dredging operations today on the Miami Harbor Deepening Project. 

In a collaborative effort with the PortMiami, Miami-Dade County, the contract for the Miami Harbor Deepening project was awarded to the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC in May 2013, for a total contract amount (Base plus Option A and Option B) of $205,797,456.

The Base phase includes deepening existing Federal navigation channels in Cuts 1 and 2, primarily from 44 feet to 52 feet deep, and widening the outermost portion of Cut 1, resulting in approximately 2.1 million cubic yards of dredge material being excavated from the Federal channel. The contractor will relocate coral, create artificial reef, and construct a seagrass mitigation site in this phase using some of the excavated material. Material not used to create the mitigation sites will be transported to the Ocean Dredged Material Disposal Site. The construction is scheduled to be complete by mid-2015.

The Corps anticipates exercising Option A in December 2013 and Option B in late January 2014.  Option A covers the dredging of Cut-3 Station 0+00 to Station 12+00 and Fisherman's Channel from Station 17+00 to the end of the Lummus Island Turning Basin, as well as dredging the berthing areas adjacent to these reaches; and, Option B covers the dredging of Cut-3 Station 12+00 to Fisherman's Channel Station 17+00 as well as dredging the berthing areas adjacent to these reaches.
