1. DESCRIPTION

The purpose of this project is for the protection of critical infrastructure, reduction of structural damages, and evacuation route protection in response to the risks and effects of coastal storms and associated impacts such as sea level rise, storm surge, and extreme wind and tidal effects. The plan includes shoreline stabilization in six (6) different locations along U.S. Route 1 (Overseas Highway) that were identified as having risk of damage due to erosion and/or wave energy during a storm event. The project includes dry floodproofing of 53 critical infrastructure buildings that were identified at risk to damage from coastal storms and non-structural measures to reduce coastal storm damage by elevating 4,698 residential and dry floodproofing 1,052 non-residential structures at risk throughout the Keys. The project was authorized under Section 8401 of the Water Resources Development Act of 2022 (WRDA 2022)

4. STATUS

The project received authorization under the Water Resources Development Act (WRDA 2022). The project received $916,000 in FY23 Omnibus Bill for Planning, Engineering and Design (PED) funds for execution of the design agreement and to initiate plans and specifications for the design of U.S. 1 revetments and shore stabilization (6 sections).
