    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Oct.12, 2022) – The Prestigious Women of Color STEM Awards recently recognized Tracye E. Thrash, a U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Budget Officer, from the Jacksonville District for 2022 Women of Color STEM Rising Star Award for Career Achievement.
  • Saturday, Oct. 9, 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer installed its first Blue Roof in Fort Myers Florida. Operation Blue Roof is a priority mission managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for FEMA. The goal of the Blue Roof program is to provide homeowners in disaster areas with fiber-reinforced, industrial-strength sheeting to protect storm-damaged roofs until homeowners can make permanent repairs. This program is a NO COST service for homeowners. Operation Blue Roof is designed to protect property, reduces temporary housing costs, and allows residents to remain in their homes while recovering from the storm. (USACE photo by Thomas Spencer)

    FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla.  (Oct. 9, 2022) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers contractors in Fort Myers, Florida, installed the first temporary ‘Blue Roof’ the first home from the aftermath of Hurricane Ian.

    Jacksonville District conducts initial Hurricane Ian coastal damage assessments

    Jacksonville, Florida (Oct. 7, 2022) -- U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, dispatched seven inspection teams around the state of Florida beginning Sunday, Oct. 2, 2022, to conduct preliminary damage assessments to federal coastal storm risk management projects impacted by Hurricane Ian.

    Chief of engineers visits Hurricane Ian battered Fort Myers Beach

    FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. (Oct. 5, 2022) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers 55th chief of engineers visited the Fort Myers Beach, Florida area to tour the damage from Hurricane Ian, a ferocious storm that struck the southwestern coast a week ago, unleashing widespread destruction of homes and businesses. Lt. Gen. Scott Spellmon, commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, visited the Emergency Operations Center in Tallahassee, took an aerial tour of the hurricane damage over Fort Myers Beach and received various briefings from his Emergency Management Operations team on the support the Corps of Engineers is providing.

    USACE signs Chief's report for Miami-Dade Coastal Storm Risk Management Project

    (JACKSONVILLE, Fla. Sept. 28, 2022 – Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellmon, commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, signed the Chief’s Report for the Miami-Dade County Coastal Storm Risk Management (CSRM) Study, recommending the study’s findings for authorization by Congress.
  • The Portugues Dam, Puerto Rico; according to the National Hurricane Center, the island was inundated by large amounts of rainfall, anywhere from 12 to 30 inches of rain.

    (PONCE, Puerto Rico) Sept. 25, 2022) -- Puerto Rico's topography varies from the low plains of the southern coast to steep mountain slopes that rise up to 600 above the Portugués River. The proposed plan to build a dam was a response to the wet season and steep mountain slopes that cause runoff from heavy rain and fill the stream quickly, flooding many surrounding areas.
  • The first generator requested for temporary power in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona is loaded and ready for transport. As soon as the work order is received, it will be transported and installed at Guanica Medical Center, Puerto Rico.

    (SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Sept. 21, 2022 -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) successfully installed a 240 Kva generator provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at the Diagnostic Treatment Center of Guanica, Puerto Rico Sept. 21, providing sufficient temporary power to the facility until commercial power is restored.

    Jacksonville District provides support in response to Hurricane Fiona

    (SAN JUAN, PUERTO RICO, Sept. 20, 2022) - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District has received FEMA Mission Assignments (MAs) for Regional Activation and Temporary Emergency Power in response to Hurricane Fiona. Under these MAs we have deployed a Temporary Emergency Power Planning and Response Team, Soldiers from the 249th Engineer Battalion, team leaders and assistant team leaders, as well as subject matter experts in logistics, temporary power, infrastructure assessment and debris. The Jacksonville District is coordinating with local, state and federal agencies on requirements and support in response to Hurricane Fiona.

    South Atlantic Coastal Study Team managed the four-year, $18.4 million, comprehensive regional study that was designed to identify the risks and vulnerabilities of tidally influenced areas to increased hurricane and storm damage as a result of sea level rise.     Today, federal, state, and local leaders joined JAXPORT and the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District to celebrate the completion of the Jacksonville Harbor Deepening Project through JAXPORT’s Blount Island Marine Terminal. The project deepened 11 miles of the federal shipping channel—from the sea buoy to Blount Island—to a depth of 47 feet from its previous depth of 40 feet.

    Matthew Schrader, a coastal engineer and planner with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Jacksonville District has worked and played on most of the 1,350 miles that make up the Florida coast. As we stood at the Seventh Street entrance of the beach, he showed me an old-timey black and white photo taken after Hurricane Dora in 1964 that he had enlarged of that very same spot.     Request for facility expansion support keeps Jacksonville District in forefront of pandemic fight

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Apr. 21, 2022) –Two years later, and still in the throes of a global pandemic, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District continues to be at the forefront of the COVID-19 fight.
  • An aerial map of the Rio Anton Ruiz restoration project construction began in January and is expected to be completed in late April 2022. The goal is to mitigate the intrusion of saltwater to Humacao Natural Reserve (HNR) to protect the Pterocarpus officinalis forest and lagoon which are freshwater systems. Intrusion of saltwater can lead to harmful impacts to the essential habitat of federally and locally listed protected species.
