Round Island Park Oceanside to close May 15

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting a Remedial Investigation at the former Fort Pierce Naval Amphibious Training Base. As a result, Round Island Park Oceanside to include the beach access, will be closed on Wednesday, May 15. Crews will be digging in the area and a safety zone will be established. People are requested to stay out of the safety zone while crews are working.

Fort Pierce shore protection project operations to start soon

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District announced that dredging operations related to the Fort Pierce Shore Protection Project will start mid-April. The project will place 385,000 cubic yards of sand on just under one mile of eroded beach in St. Lucie County. Sand placement will start immediately adjacent to the Fort Pierce Inlet South Jetty and move southward.

Munitions found near Vero Beach

During an offshore removal action conducted by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (Corps) in Indian River County, south of Vero Beach, to address debris associated with past military activities at the former Fort Pierce Naval Amphibious Training Base, contractors discovered two suspected bombs in approximately 11 feet of water. This weekend, an explosives and ordnance disposal unit from the Mayport Naval Station will excavate the items, which are about 50 percent buried in the sand. They will then float and tow the items approximately one mile offshore for assessment and possible underwater detonation, scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 28.
