JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District awarded a $7,017,000.00 contract to Southern Dredging Co. Inc. of Charleston, South Carolina, for the maintenance dredging of U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay, Georgia, and Marine Corps Support Facility – Blount Island, Florida.

The maintenance dredging is critical to supporting national defense operations.

Dredging the Kings Bay Inner Channel will return the project to its authorized depths, and dredging will also remove shoaled material from the Marine Corps Support Facility – Blount Island.  Work is divided into a base and eight options. The contract incorporated two feet of allowable over-depth throughout the base and dredging options. Work also includes bird monitoring, and turbidity and disposal monitoring.

The Corps estimates the contractor will dredge more than a million cubic yards, and dispose of it at two upland disposal sites.
