Fieldwork Schedule Notification – August 2020
Congressionally Authorized Areas of the Northwest Peninsula
Fieldwork at the congressionally authorized areas of the Northwest Peninsula (portions of Carlos Rosario Beach, Flamenco Beach, and Tamarindo Beach; Carlos Rosario Trail and the campground) was completed in March 2018. However, with the anticipated renovation of Flamenco Beach and Flamenco Campground areas, the municipality of Culebra requested support from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) to investigate and remove munitions that may be present under the structures that will be removed by the municipality. Those areas were not accessible and thus could not be investigated during the previous fieldwork. Following the demolition of the structures, the USACE plans to investigate the previously inaccessible areas and address any munitions that may be encountered. Our teams will begin their investigation mid-August. Since your safety is our primary concern, teams will be enforcing a safety zone around the area they are working, so please stay away from these areas when you see the teams working.

The munitions items will be destroyed in a designated area on land at Carlos Rosario Beach. A safety buffer will be enforced from 6 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 28 and Tuesday, Oct. 29. The safety zone includes the water around the designated area so boaters are advised to stay away from the area. Please note that people on the island may hear the detonations or see smoke associated with the operations. If weather or other delays prevent the team from completing the planned detonation activities, they will be conducted the day after. September to December 2019
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ contractor will be conducting underwater investigations in Flamenco Bay, Luis Peña Channel, surrounding cays and Culebrita from September to November 2019.
This phase involves using divers to examine metallic objects to determine if they are munitions. In addition, fieldwork activities associated with the Time Critical Removal Action on land at Cayo del Agua will be conducted from September to December 2019.
You may see boats or crews during this time, and they will be enforcing a safety zone while they are working. Teams may request that you stay away from where they are working or out of the water completely, depending on what they are doing.
Your safety is our priority. Never touch, move or disturb something you think may be a munition, and remember to follow the 3Rs (Recognize, Retreat, and Report). Recognize the item may be dangerous. Retreat and do not touch, kick or move it. Report its location immediately by calling 787-527-9244.

Septiembre a Diciembre del 2019
Durante los meses de septiembre a noviembre del 2019, contratistas del Cuerpo de Ingenieros del Ejercito de los Estados Unidos, estarán llevando a cabo estudios subacuáticos en la Bahía Flamenco, el Canal Luis Peña, alrededor de los cayos y en Culebrita. Esta fase conlleva el uso de buzos para examinar objetos metálicos bajo agua y determinar si estos son municiones.
También, durante los meses de septiembre a diciembre del 2019, se estarán llevando a cabo actividades relacionadas con la Acción de Remoción de Tiempo Critico terrestres en Cayo del Agua.
Se podrán observar botes y a las brigadas trabajando durante éste periodo. Las brigadas establecerán un perímetro de seguridad alrededor de las áreas donde estarán trabajando, por lo que es importante que el público se mantenga alejado de éstas áreas. Dependiendo de las labores en curso, puede que se solicite que el público se mantenga fuera del agua completamente.
Su seguridad es nuestra prioridad. Nunca toque, mueva o altere algo que usted piense pudiera ser una munición y recuerde seguir el protocolo de las 3Rs de seguridad (Reconozca, Retroceda y Reporte). Reconozca que el artefacto puede ser peligroso. Retroceda y no lo toque o mueva. Reporte su localización inmediatamente a las autoridades llamando al 787-527-9244.
