    USACE signs MOA Agreement for Guajataca Dam Repairs

    SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers South Atlantic Division commander, Brigadier General Daniel Hibner, signed a Memorandum of Agreement on June 29, 2023, with the Puerto Rico Power Authority (PREPA), to initiate the permanent repairs of the Guajataca Dam in Isabela, Puerto Rico. The total estimated cost for this project is around $1 billion. The funds will be received from PREPA with funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency Disaster Recovery Funds. It is estimated that the permanent repairs will benefit 1,000 people that live directly downstream of the dam and another 250,000 that receive water from the filtration plants in Guajataca, Quebradillas, Isabela, and the mountains of Aguadilla. Governor Pedro Pierluisi was present during the signing ceremony.

    The first generator requested for temporary power in Puerto Rico after Hurricane Fiona is loaded and ready for transport. As soon as the work order is received, it will be transported and installed at Guanica Medical Center, Puerto Rico.

    (SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico Sept. 21, 2022 -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) successfully installed a 240 Kva generator provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) at the Diagnostic Treatment Center of Guanica, Puerto Rico Sept. 21, providing sufficient temporary power to the facility until commercial power is restored.

    En Septiembre del 2017, el Huracán María azotó a todo Puerto Rico causando destrucción y daños significativos a través de la Isla. Tras su paso devastador, la Agencia Federal de Manejo de Emergencias (FEMA por sus siglas en inglés) activó de inmediato al Cuerpo de Ingenieros del Ejército de los Estados Unidos (USACE por sus siglas en inglés) para iniciar sus funciones establecidas por ley como coordinador de FEMA para el sector de Obras Públicas e Ingeniería. "Más de diez agencias locales y federales, así como personal militar, apoyaron la misión de emergencia para estabilizar el aliviadero, el éxito de la operación se debió a su rápida respuesta y su voluntad de colaborar para lograr el objetivo en común", dijo la Ingeniera de Área de USACE para las Antillas, Ing. Maricarmen Crespo. “La rápida acción de USACE al solicitar apoyo de las Fuerzas Armadas de los Estados Unidos y la respuesta inmediata de ellos para entregar material a la represa evitó una posible catástrofe".

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers worked rapidly to repair a levee breach caused by Hurricane Sandy in Mantoloking, N.J. The breach occurred at the end of the only bridge onto the barrier island, effectively cuting it off from the rest of the state. At the peak of the response effort, the Corps had nearly 4,000 employees from across the nation engaged in more than 38 FEMA mission assignments, exceeding a total of $134 million.

    Corps responds to Superstorm Sandy

    Hurricane Sandy was the biggest storm yet of an active tropical storm season. It formed south of Jamaica on Oct. 22, smashed through Cuba Oct. 24-25 and began affecting beaches in Florida by Oct. 26. As it moved further north, concern heighted as it merged with another storm, prior to making landfall near Atlantic City, N.J. Oct. 29. Jacksonville District engineers were on alert from the beginning. The district activated its emergency operations center (EOC) Oct. 24 and closely monitored the storm as it moved through the Bahamas. Once reports started circulating about the full range of impacts in New York and New Jersey, several Jacksonville District team members were tapped for duties in a variety of locations.
