  • Jacksonville District delays start of Sawpit maintenance dredging to accommodate shorebird nesting

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, has delayed the maintenance dredging for the federal navigation channel in the vicinity of Sawpit Creek, Nassau County, Florida, until early October 2024 to accommodate active shorebird nesting within the beach placement area of Amelia Island State Park.

    U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, awarded a $6.9 million contract yesterday to Southwind Construction of Evansville, Indiana, for maintenance dredging of the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (IWW) federal navigation channel in the vicinity of Sawpit Creek, Nassau County, Florida.

  • Dredging of Kings Bay Entrance Channel and Fernandina Beach Re-Nourishment Project Begins This Month

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District will begin operations and maintenance dredging of the Kings Bay Entrance Channel and sections of the inner channel this month. USACE awarded a $15.5 million contract in September to the Great Lakes Dredge & Dock Company, LLC, to execute the project. Funding is provided entirely by the Navy, with no cost to the City Fernandina Beach. Great Lakes plans to begin equipment mobilization during the second week of December, which will include staging of piping on the beaches. Dredging operations will commence early January 2020.

  • U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay dredging and Fernandina Beach renourishment starts soon

    Nassau County residents and visitors will begin seeing construction equipment and dredging pipes on Fernandina Beach around November 1 in preparation for the next scheduled maintenance dredging of U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay and sand placement at Fernandina Beach and Fort Clinch State Park - which will get underway in December and will last for approximately three months.

  • Corps awards contract for U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay dredging

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District awarded a $9.8 million contract to Manson Construction Company for the next scheduled maintenance dredging of U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay Entrance Channel. In addition, the Dutra Group will return to complete sand placement at Fernandina Beach around the December timeframe.

  • U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay dredging completion and Fernandina Beach renourishment revised schedule

    Dredging of U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay wrapped up March 31, which included maintenance dredging of the entrance channel and parts of the inner channel, returning the project to its authorized depths. The project also included beneficial placement of beach compatible sand in the northern portion of Fernandina Beach in Nassau County.

    Nassau County residents and visitors will begin seeing construction equipment and dredging pipes on Fernandina Beach around the first week of January in preparation for the next scheduled maintenance dredging of U.S. Naval Station Kings Bay and sand placement at Fernandina Beach which will get underway in mid-February.
