The USACE Jacksonville District Flagler County Coastal Storm Risk Management project in Flagler Beach will temporarily close and re-route traffic along and adjacent to SRS A1A beginning tomorrow, Thursday, Aug. 22, at 6 a.m. to relocate heavy equipment north of Flagler Beach Pier. Closures and detours are projected to be restored within 2-4 hours.

A small section of SR A1A will be temporarily closed with traffic detoured for in the early morning hours. A portion of the boardwalk east of A1A will be removed and a temporary sand ramp constructed from the beach up to A1A just north of So. 6th Street to facilitate equipment access. Once that section is closed, a large, tracked machine will traverse the sand ramp and travel along previously placed ground protection mats to the beach access ramp at the corner of Moody Blvd (SR100).

Once the equipment is on the beach A1A will be reopened to traffic. Please comply with all on-site signage and directions, and exercise driving caution and courtesy to ensure public safety.

The sand ramp will remain and the boardwalk will not be replaced until the equipment is moved back south of the pier, at a date still to be determined, for demobilization. A similar, temporary closure and re-routing of traffic will be conducted at that time.

Once complete, the constructed beach and dune system will serve as the first line of defense from future storm events and sea level rise. The Flagler Co. CSRM project is constructed to “sacrifice” its protective buffer with loss of sand to protect infrastructure, including residential and commercial properties, the SR A1A and various critical public facilities. Other significant project benefits include expanded recreational beach opportunities for residents and visitors, and critical nesting habitat for sea turtles and shorebirds.

USACE Jacksonville District, Flagler Co., FDOT and the City of Flagler Beach have coordinated closely to ensure the beach nourishment is completed ahead of the mid-October deadline to start pier rehabilitation efforts. Thank you for bearing with this temporary inconvenience to create a significant future public good for all.
