1. DESCRIPTION
This project is authorized by Section 205 of the Flood Control Act of 1948, as amended. The Municipality of Yabucoa is located between Humacao and Guayama in southeastern Puerto Rico at the intersection of PR 3 and PR 53. A major creek flows through the middle of Yabucoa’s downtown area as a tributary to the greater Rio Guayanés which flows north of the Municipality and empties into Puerto Yabucoa. The eye of Hurricane Maria made landfall on Puerto Rico in September 2017 and the residents experienced severe flooding and damage associated with the storm. The Rio Guayanés basin is approximately 14.5 square miles and has a peak discharge greater than 32,300 cubic feet per second for the 10% exceedance event.
The study objective is to reduce the flood risk (frequency and magnitude) in the community.
