1. DESCRIPTION
The study was authorized under Statute 69-132, Chapter 140, Public Law 84-71-June 15, 1955. Charlotte County is on the lower Gulf (west) coast of Florida about 75 miles south of Tampa, Florida. The study area consists of 14 miles along the Gulf shoreline of Charlotte County that includes a series of coastal barrier islands. The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has classified 6.5 miles of Gulf shoreline in Charlotte County as critically eroded. Opportunities exist to address these problems and manage coastal storm risks to achieve National Economic Development (NED), Other Social Effects (OSE), Regional Economic Development (RED), and Environmental Quality (EQ) benefits. Recent tropical storms and hurricanes have caused damage to coastal infrastructure and eroded portions of the beach to the point that armor has been constructed by local interest and there is little to no dry beach left to protect property infrastructure from future storms.
The primary issue this study will investigate is beach erosion along the Gulf shoreline of Charlotte County. Inundation and wave attack are expected to become greater problems in the future with rising sea levels. Without a federal project, the sponsor and private homeowners are likely to take steps to combat erosion and loss of property; thereby running the risk that these efforts might not be coordinated in a holistic fashion or incorporate regional concerns, such as sediment movement and environmental/habitat considerations.

4. STATUS
On 11 February 2023, the Board of County Commissioners for Charlotte County, Florida issued a Letter of Intent (LOI). The Jacksonville District is developing a Feasibility Cost Share Agreement (FCSA) for the study with Charlotte County.
