1. DESCRIPTION
The Upper St. Johns River Basin extends approximately over 2,000 square miles, bounded by the Atlantic Coastal Ridge to the east and the Kissimmee River Basin to the west. The St. Johns River flows from its Upper headwaters near Vero Beach 310 miles north to Jacksonville and into the Atlantic Ocean. The entire river basin includes parts of eight Florida counties. The Upper Basin project area is focused in Okeechobee, Brevard, Indian River, and Osceola Counties. This project’s system of canals, levees, and water control structures are designed and operated to provide flood damage reduction, recreational benefits improve and restore the environmental health and function of the basin’s watershed through the use of water management and water conservation areas; and to enhance fish and wildlife habitat through the re-establishment of marshes.

4. STATUS
The project is nearly complete with 27 of 28 construction contracts completed. Only the S252 construction repairs remain. A design deficiency report was approved by HQ USACE in December 2017. Congress provided funding in FY18 to initiate design and construction. The contract was awarded in August 2019 and construction was completed in May 2020. Other project close out activities such as the Western Boundary Model, Water Control Plan, and Operational Land Certification, are currently underway. Project Close Out and Transfer are scheduled to be completed by the end of FY2020 pending completion of the S-252 repairs.
