FACT SHEET

Big Fishweir Creek, FL (206)
Construction (C)
Congressional Districts: 4, 5

1. DESCRIPTION

Big Fishweir Creek, located approximately 4 miles south of downtown Jacksonville, is an urban tributary of the St. Johns River. It enters the St. Johns River (An American Heritage River) just north of the Ortega River and serves as essential fish habitat, influenced by tides. The contributing sub-basin has been predominantly urbanized with residential land use, prior to storm water regulations, resulting in limited stormwater management and sediment deposition in the creek.

Encroachment along the creek’s banks and sediment deposition from urbanization have diminished the natural habitat in the creek and along its banks. The purpose of the Section 206 CAP project is to restore healthy aquatic habitat in Big Fishweir Creek. The restoration aims to provide nursery areas, food and shelter sources, and improve water quality in the creek.
