4. STATUS

A Memorandum of Agreement with the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) to contribute funds for the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of both the Intracoastal Waterway (IWW) and Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) was executed on 3 September 1997. Since that date FIND has provided over $70,000,000 for the O&M of the IWW and AIWW.

The last dredging event for the AIWW occurred within the Sawpit Reach. An O&M dredging contract was awarded in September 2018 for approximately 600K cubic yards of material to be removed out of the federal channel. 95% of the material dredged out of this reach of the AIWW is beach-quality material and is always placed on the beach at Amelia Island State Park as beneficial use of dredged material. The remainder of the material within this reach is not beach quality material and is placed within the already constructed dredge material management area DU-2. The next O&M dredging event is anticipated for a contract award in FY 2023. Funds received in FY 2022 will be used to finish updated National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) documentation, acquire water quality certification, and prepare plans and specifications for an early FY 2023 contract award. Should additional funding become available, plans and specifications would be prepared for Nassau Reach 1 in preparation of an O&M dredging contract.
