U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District Commander, Col. James Booth, signed a Federal Cost Sharing Agreement with the City of Daytona Beach, Florida, for the Daytona Beach Flood Risk Management Feasibility Study Jan. 22, 2024, in Jacksonville. The 3-year feasibility study will investigate solutions to reduce the risk of flooding to citizens, infrastructure and the economic vitality of Daytona Beach. The study will assess and hydraulically model the worst flooding areas within the vicinity of Nova Road, Orange Avenue, Belview Road and U.S. Highway 1 (South Ridgewood Ave).
U.S. Army Corps of Engineers dredging vessel Murden arrived Jan. 7 at IWW Crossroads in Martin County, Florida. The Murden removed approximately 19,000 cubic yards of shoaling between the Okeechobee and Intracoastal Waterway channels, completed dredging Jan. 19, and departed for return to the Wilmington District the same day for maintenance before sailing on to the Northeast to conduct other dredging operations.
The Port of Tampa is the largest and most diverse port in Florida, serving the 10th largest economy (Tampa Bay/Orlando I-4 corridor), which is now the 3rd largest state in the U.S. Port Tampa Bay is Florida's largest port in cargo tonnage and land area. It serves as a major cruise port and services a diverse mix of bulk, break-bulk, container commodities, and energy products that serve central Florida. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the South Water Management District celebrated the completion of the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands Project S-709 Pump Station project with a ribbon cutting ceremony Aug. 22, 2023 in the Biscayne National Park in Homestead, Fla. The project is to rehydrate coastal wetlands and reduce damaging point-source freshwater discharge to Biscayne Bay and Biscayne National Park.
