1. DESCRIPTION

Volusia County, Florida has expressed interest in pursuing a new start feasibility study for critically eroded beaches within the county. There is an existing study authorization from 16 Feb 2000 which reads:

“Resolved by the Committee on Transportation and Infrastructure of the United States House of Representatives, that in accordance with Section 110 of the River and Harbor Act of 1962, the Secretary of the Army is requested to review the feasibility of providing shoreline erosion control, storm damage reduction, environmental restoration and protection, and related improvements to the shoreline at Daytona Beach Shores, Florida and adjacent areas.”

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection (FDEP) has identified a critically eroded shoreline which extends past Daytona Beach Shores and lies within the proposed study limit. There is one area of concern, Hiles Blvd (R-183-184) in southern, unincorporated, New Smyrna Beach, that the county is very concerned with. The study limit begins approximately 2.75 miles south of the northern Volusia County line at R016 and runs south to R208, approximately 12 miles north of the southern boundary of Volusia County.

Volusia County has identified a funding source for their share of the $3M study.

In November 2021, Volusia County unanimously approved to move forward with the Volusia County Feasibility Study. The County has identified their funding source for their 50% of the anticipated $3 million cost of a feasibility study
