1. DESCRIPTION

The Kings Bay Submarine Base project consists of maintenance dredging within the Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay including the main channel to varying depths, upper turning basin, Site Six, Magnetic Silencing Facility, Explosive Handling Basin, Explosive Handling Wharves, Medium Auxiliary Repair Dock, Refit Wharves and the Drydock Caisson Gate and Sill. This project connects to the Kings Bay Entrance Channel maintenance dredging project. Dredged material is placed in four Dredge Material Management Areas (DMMA): Crab Island, Mainside, D/A-1 or D/A-2. Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay is located in Camden County, Georgia, adjacent to the town of St. Mary’s and across from the City of Fernandina Beach, Nassau County, Florida.

4. STATUS

Kings Bay Submarine Base is dredged annually and is funded with 100% Navy funding. Cutter-suction dredges are utilized to complete the work. The FY22 maintenance dredging is scheduled to be completed in May 2023. The FY23 maintenance dredging is scheduled to be awarded in May 2023 and is scheduled for completion by June 2024. The FY24 maintenance dredging design is scheduled to be initiated in June 2023. Dredged material will be placed in one of four Dredge Material Management Areas (DMMA): Crab Island, Mainside, D/A-1 or D/A-2. USACE is also conducting DMMA maintenance with 100% Navy funding.
