Florida’s unique waterways are under constant pressure from invasive plants and animals that can degrade water quality, choke out native wildlife, and hinder recreation. To meet these challenges, USACE has drafted an Integrated Letter Report and Programmatic Environmental Assessment (LR/PEA) that modernizes how we support our state and local partners in this fight.
What’s Changing?
This isn't just a renewal of the old program, it’s an upgrade. The proposed updates include:
- Managing Invasive Animals: For the first time, this agreement will expand beyond plants to include the control of invasive and nuisance animals that threaten our ecosystems.
- Next-Generation Tools: The program authorizes the use of the most up-to-date chemical, biological, and mechanical methods to ensure management is as effective and safe as possible.
- Stronger Partnerships: By updating our cost-share agreement with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), we are ensuring Federal resources are used where they are needed most.
Why It Matters
From the Everglades to the Panhandle, invasive species don't stop at property lines. This programmatic approach allows USACE to leverage Federal funding to support large-scale, statewide efforts that protect Florida's environmental health and keep our waters open for fishing, boating, and swimming.
