Rio de la plata – Groundbreaking ceremony
Jacksonville District Deputy District Engineer Tim Murphy, delivered remarks during a groundbreaking ceremony for the Rio de La Plata flood control project Monday, April 1 in Dorado, Puerto Rico. Puerto Rico’s Gov. Ricardo Roselló hosted the ceremony, which was attended by Puerto Rico's Resident Commissioner, Congresswoman Jenniffer González-Colón along with Sec. Tania Vazquez Rivera, head of Dep. of Natural and Environmental Resources, the project’s non-federal sponsor. The Corps awarded the $17.3 million contract to Construcciones Jose Carro based out of Ponce, Puerto Rico. The project will extend the western levee and straighten the existing La Plata River along with scour protection to the existing Dorado Bridge. Construction will happen in three phases over the next two and a half years.
