    Sharon Rodriguez, Deputy Chief, Programs and Project Management, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District represented Brig. Gen. Daniel H. Hibner, Commander South Atlantic Division, at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Hydrographic Services Review Panel along with Capt. José E. Díaz, Commander, Sector San Juan, Captain of the Port Puerto Rico/U. S. Virgin Islands, U.S. Coast Guard and Cristina Cabrera, Special Assistant and Interim Director of the Office of Coastal Programs and Climate Change at the Department of Natural Resources, Puerto Rico. During the presentation, Rodríguez presented an overview of the coastal projects managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District as well as the agency’s surveying capabilities and maintenance of federal channels and harbors. Rodríguez praised the partnership between both federal agencies as USACE continues to conduct surveys to be used in NOAA nautical charts and build resilient coastal projects.

    Corps groundbreaking ceremony kicks off Everglades restoration construction projects

    MIAMI, Fla. (Oct. 23, 2020) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District hosted a groundbreaking ceremony today for the Central Everglades Planning Project South, a project designed to restore more natural flows through the heart of the Everglades and improve water flows south to Everglades National Park.

    With interagency meetings, Antilles regulatory office aims to accelerate permitting process

    Every year the Antilles office receives dozens of requests for permits from individuals and businesses intending to either build infrastructure or implement innovations for issues affecting the islands’ ecosystems. In order to assist applicants navigate the permitting process, Regulatory Section Chief Sindulfo Castillo hosts inter-agency meetings which allows applicants the opportunity to present their proposals and interact with federal and local representatives.

    Lionfish were first reported off Florida’s Atlantic Coast in 1985, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission website. Lionfish can reach up to 22 inches in length and have a venomous spine that can cause painful wounds.

    Lionfish continue to populate, pose threats to coral reefs

    Their dorsal spines and zebra-like bodies may draw one in for a closer look. Commonly used in aquariums for show, the invasive lionfish has made its way from the South Pacific and Indian Oceans to the east coast. In the past decade, they’ve been rapidly expanding from Florida to North Carolina, as well as the Caribbean.
