    The Secretary of the Army has awarded the Meritorious Civilian Service Medal to Kimberly A. Taplin upon her retirement. As Senior Program Manager Forward, Jacksonville District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from April 2015 to April 2022. Ms. Taplin was instrumental in the success of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan and the South Florida Everglades Ecosystem Restoration Program by providing technical oversight and coordination and engagement with tribal, federal, state, local agencies and stakeholders. Ms. Taplin's commitment to the restoration of America's Everglades and dedication to Federal Service reflect great credit upon her, the Jacksonville District, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the U.S. Army.

    USACE highlights restoration momentum at Everglades Coalition Conference

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (Jan. 10, 2022) - After years of challenging policy work, Everglades restoration efforts are beginning to show real momentum. Col. James Booth, commander of the Jacksonville District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, gave an update on the "incredible progress" made on the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan over the past few years, including 20 projects complete or in phase 1 implementation, another 20 authorized or already under construction, and 8 more still in the feasibility study phase.

    The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District’s multi-billion dollar Indian River Lagoon South (IRL-S) construction of the C-44 component is due for completion June 2021.

    Corps groundbreaking ceremony kicks off Everglades restoration construction projects

    MIAMI, Fla. (Oct. 23, 2020) – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District hosted a groundbreaking ceremony today for the Central Everglades Planning Project South, a project designed to restore more natural flows through the heart of the Everglades and improve water flows south to Everglades National Park.

    Congress authorizes eight Jacksonville District projects

    Eight U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District projects that will provide critical infrastructure to local ports and ecosystem restoration efforts in Florida received approval as part of the Water Resources Reform and Development Act (WRRDA) of 2014, which was signed by President Barack Obama June 10.

    Crews work on the De Diego bridge in San Juan, Puerto Rico as part of the Rio Puerto Nuevo flood control project. The contract is one of 100 contract awards worth a combined $1.6 billion that’s being overseen by the Jacksonville District Construction Division.

    This panther kitten was discovered in the Fakahatchee State Park Preserve, just east of the Picayune Strand Restoration Project area.

    It’s a girl! Kitten born to rescued and released Florida panther

    In September 2011, a pair of orphaned five-month-old Florida panther kittens was rescued by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) biologists, after their mother was found dead. Too young to survive on their own, they were raised in captivity at White Oak Plantation in Yulee, Fla., with the goal of one day releasing them back into the wild.

    Corps project manager sets future conditions in Afghanistan

    Robert Medlock, a 10-year veteran of Jacksonville District, just returned from his second deployment with the Corps in February and is now incorporating new skill sets he acquired while overseas into his management of Everglades restoration projects in the district’s Ecosystem Branch.

    JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, commanding general of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), visited the Everglades October 10, 2012 to see the restoration work being performed by the Jacksonville District and their partnering agencies. "USACE has one of the largest environmental restoration and sustainability roles in the federal government, and the Everglades restoration is our largest project of this kind," said Lt. Gen. Thomas P. Bostick, commanding General of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. "After viewing first-hand the enormous challenges facing Everglades restoration and meeting with our partners in this effort, I am absolutely convinced that working together, we can achieve restoration goals and improve this ecological treasure for future generations."
