1. DESCRIPTION

The Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) project authorizes a channel 12 feet deep by 90 feet wide in land cuts and narrow streams and 12 feet deep by 150 feet wide in open waters. The length of the project within Jacksonville District boundaries is approximately 22 miles long, from Fernandina Harbor, Florida to the St. Johns River.

4. STATUS

A Memorandum of Agreement with the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND) to contribute funds for the Operation and Maintenance (O&M) of both the IWW and Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway (AIWW) was executed on 3 September 1997. Since that date, FIND has provided over $65,000,000 for the O&M of the IWW and AIWW.

A construction contract for O&M dredging was awarded in September 2018 for approximately 600K cubic yards of material to be removed out of the Federal channel.  95% of this material is beach quality and will be placed on the beach at Amelia Island State Park.  The remainder of the material will be dredged and placed in the already constructed dredge material management area DU-2.
