The weather in Downtown Jacksonville was dreary, with clouds overhead and a persistent drizzle, but that couldn’t dampen the spirits of the 21 members of the USACE Jacksonville District’s JAX-Strong team. They arrived at James Weldon Johnson Park with one goal in mind for The Baldwin Group Corporate 5k: to run hard and have fun. Alongside 1,266 other participants from 55 companies, the park buzzed with pre-race energy—stretching, jogging in place, and shaking out nerves. The JAX-Strong roster was a testament to the team’s inclusive spirit, boasting everything from seasoned competitors and casual runners to first-timers and spirited walkers.

"I thought we could win the ‘Military and Government Division,’” said run coordinator Patrick Snyder, who serves as the district's Chief of Shore Protection when he's not organizing team events.

As the race began, a wave of runners surged through the city streets. The route took them on a tour of downtown landmarks, from the Duval County Courthouse to the Museum of Contemporary Art. Leading the JAX-Strong pack were competitive runners like biologist Peter Francissen, who has been running since childhood. But right there with them in spirit were first-time participant Elimar Torres and walkers Luis Rentas and Trisston Brown, proving that every step counts.

Smiles and flushed faces told the story at the finish line. "It's that runner's high!" said a triumphant Francissen, crossing the line at a swift 17:56. The excitement was contagious. "This will not be my last run!" declared Torres, already hooked on the experience.

The celebration peaked when the official results were announced: JAX-Strong had clinched first place in the Military and Government category. "We need more people to come out next year!" Snyder urged. "Get a tent and build upon that esprit de corps!”

After a hiatus since 2017, the Jacksonville District is back in the running, starting a powerful new tradition. All it takes is a pair of sneakers and the desire to have fun.
