JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) Jacksonville District awarded a contract on April 13, 2026, to Weeks Marine of Covington, Louisiana, for the third periodic renourishment of the Venice Beach Hurricane and Storm Damage Reduction Project.
Following the award, the contractor received an official notice to proceed on April 17. The project aims to restore approximately 3.2 miles of critically eroded shoreline in Sarasota County, extending from just south of the Venice Inlet to just south of the Venice Fishing Pier.
This renourishment is vital for protecting the Venice community from storm surge and coastal erosion.
Crews will dredge beach-compatible sand from an offshore borrow area located roughly 11 nautical miles southwest of the project site. In addition to sand placement, the contract includes the extension of five existing stormwater outfalls to ensure proper drainage for the restored beach.
Local residents and visitors can expect to see equipment mobilizing on the beach as early as the beginning of June 2026.
To ensure public safety, the contractor will temporarily close portions of successive 1,000- to 1,500-foot sections of the beach for five to seven days at a time as sand is placed.
All work is scheduled for completion no later than October 2026.
