JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Jacksonville District, will begin renourishment of the South Reach segment of the Brevard County, Florida Shore Protection Project (SPP), mid-February.
Work will begin near Spessard Holland Beach Park in Melbourne Beach and continue northward ending near Flug Avenue. Beach compatible sand will be dredged from the Canaveral Shoals II offshore borrow area and will be hydraulically pumped onto the beach.
The USACE led project is 100% Federally funded with emergency funds in response to Hurricanes Ian and Nicole and is executed in partnership with the non-Federal sponsor, Brevard County Natural Resources Management Department, and their costal engineering consultant Foth | Olsen.
“We are excited to see this iteration of the Brevard County Shore Protection Project through to completion,” noted Chris Ren, Senior Project Manager for the Jacksonville District. “Although there will be future renourishments, this is the conclusory effort in response to Hurricanes Ian and Nicole, and we’re looking forward to giving a renewed Melbourne Beach back to Brevard County”.
To ensure public safety, beach access will be restricted in the active construction zone in approximately 500 to 1,500-foot-long sections, but will remain open elsewhere along the beach. Sand ramps will be placed over shoreline pipeline approximately every 200 to 300 feet to ease beachgoer access to the water.
Work is expected to be completed prior to April 30 and the beginning of turtle-nesting season.
