St. Lucie Inlet is located in Martin County on the Atlantic coast of Florida, approximately midway down the state.  Section 201 of the Flood Control Act of 1965 authorized the project which includes a channel 16 feet deep and 300 feet wide, tapering to 10 feet deep and 150 feet wide through the inlet, and a channel 7 feet deep and 100 feet wide between the inlet and the Intracoastal Waterway. Project modifications were authorized in 1974 to include a sediment impoundment basin adjacent to the north jetty, extension of the north jetty (including 500 ft. weir section), a detached breakwater immediately south of the entrance channel, and construction of a new south jetty.

Martin County executed a contributed funds agreement in March 2016 for the Jacksonville District Corps of Engineers to perform operation and maintenance (O&M) dredging within the inlet every 2 to 3 years if federal funding is not available. Design is underway for the next maintenance event. A Cooperative Agreement is being prepared in support of a repair the south jetty.
