1. DESCRIPTION
The Río Grande de Loíza basin, the island’s largest, is located just east of San Juan and covers approximately 310 square miles. The project is located in the cities of Gurabo and Caguas. Almost 5,000 families are affected by flash floods, as well as hundreds of commercial structures and public facilities. The authorized plan of improvement includes channelization of Río Bairoa and Río Caguitas and levees along the Río Grande de Loíza and Río Gurabo to protect urbanized areas.

4. STATUS
Update to the existing recommended plan (NEPA, cost, economics) will be performed. This update to the existing recommended plan will deems the project technically feasible, economically justified and environmentally acceptable. Construction required under supplemental capability consists of channelization of Río Bairoa and Río Caguitas and levees along the Río Grande de Loíza and Río Gurabo to protect urbanized areas.
