Environmental report on proposed dike repairs available for final comment

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District is taking comments for the next 30 days on an environmental report related to the rehabilitation of Herbert Hoover Dike surrounding Lake Okeechobee. The comment period for the final environmental impact statement on the Herbert Hoover Dike Dam Safety Modification Study opens today (June 3) and will remain open until Sunday, July 3. Corps to host public meetings on dike rehabilitation plan

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Jacksonville District, will host three meetings in January in communities around Lake Okeechobee to discuss a draft summary of a dam safety modification report and an associated environmental impact statement regarding rehabilitation of Herbert Hoover Dike. The Corps released the report on December 24 for public review and comment. Corps suspends swimming activities at Franklin Recreation Area

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District has temporarily suspended swimming and other water activities at the W.P. Franklin South Recreation Area located near Fort Myers. The Corps was notified this afternoon by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) that an algal bloom upstream of the beach had tested positive for microcystin, a substance produced by freshwater cyanobacteria. Tests of water in the immediate vicinity of the beach were negative. However, the Corps has decided to suspend water activities at the beach until further notice. [Read More]

Corps to close portion of Lake O Scenic Trail near Okeechobee

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will close a section of the Lake Okeechobee Scenic Trail (LOST) near Okeechobee as part of rehabilitation activities on the Herbert Hoover Dike surrounding the lake. The Corps will close about 3 miles of the trail between Taylor Creek and Nubbin Slough. The closures are necessary for public safety while work on the replacement of a nearby water control structure (Culvert 8) takes place. The trail is expected to be closed in this location from Monday (April 27) until mid-May. [Read More]

Environmental report on proposed dike repairs available for review

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Jacksonville District has released an environmental report for public review on its proposal for additional embankment repairs on Herbert Hoover Dike surround Lake Okeechobee. The report, known as an environmental assessment and draft finding of no significant impact focuses on a Corps proposal to extend embankment repairs in a six-mile area between Lake Harbor and Belle Glade on the south side of the lake.
