Early morning road closure on Tamiami Trail April 5 and April 9

Published April 2, 2012

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (April 2, 2012) – The eastbound and westbound lanes of Tamiami Trail, State Road 90, U.S. Route 41, near the Tamiami Trail bridge project will be closed during the early morning hours Thursday, April 5 from 4 to 4:30 a.m. and also on Monday, April 9 from 4 to 4:30 a.m.

The closure will begin approximately one mile west of Krome Avenue for approximately one mile. The lane closures are required to safely relocate a large crane on the Tamiami Trail bridge construction site, approximately 1.3 miles west of Krome Ave.

Message boards were installed to notify the public of the upcoming closure. The advance warning signs are located approximately a half-mile west of Krome Avenue and just west of Cooper Town.

The contractor for the project, Kiewit Infrastructure South Company, has received approval for the lane closures from the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT).

Tamiami Trail was built in the 1920s for travel between Tampa and Miami, two of the earliest centers of population growth in southern Florida. Decades later, restoration agencies identified the east-west roadway, which blocks the flow of water into Everglades National Park, as one of the most serious threats to the health of the Everglades. The one-mile bridge currently under construction will improve water flow to Northeast Shark River Slough in Everglades National Park.
