Of these, 16 were empty and the remainder contained explosives. An unexploded ordnance technician is in the demolition hole with five of these munitions. Note the shaped charges at the end of each munition. This shoots into the device, and if filled with explosives (TNT), it will detonate. The white cord in the picture is the detonating cord, used during removal operations on Sat., Jan 5, 2008 to destroy and remove the munitions.

Types of MEC scrap being found in the bombing target areaOct. 3, 2007

This scrap came out of the J, K and L grids inside Pinecastle. On the right side of the photograph are two bodies of rifle grenades. Most of the scrap is rusted and cannot be positively identified. On the left side the third item, two down might be a nozzle from a 2.36 inch rocket. Most of the scrap we have taken out is typical of a ranch, i.e., nails, and wire.

Fact Sheet

September 2007 — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is conducting an environmental investigation on a former World War II training facility in Orange County, previously known as Pinecastle Jeep Range. The Odyssey Middle School was built in 2001 on part of the former target range used by the military for bombing practice and weapons demonstrations from 1944 through 1945. The Department of Defense leased this property until 1947 when it was declared surplus and returned to its owner.
