1. DESCRIPTION

The project area is located just south of Egmont Key at the entrance to Tampa Harbor. Section 201, Public Law 98-298, authorized the project for construction. The Manatee County Shore Protection Project provides for 4.7 miles of initial beach fill and periodic nourishment along Anna Maria Island. The project dimensions provide a berm 75 feet wide at elevation 5 feet above mean low water and a natural seaward slope shaped by wave action. Initial construction consisting of 2.6 million cubic yards of beach fill along 3.2 miles of shorefront was completed in March 1993 by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

4. STATUS

Assessment of the beach post Hurricane Irma shows a deficit of 530,000 cubic yards. Although it did not qualify for emergency FCCE rehabilitation, planning for the third renourishment is underway.
